BAIRD BIDS FAREWELL
With only 9 games left of the season, Co-Captain Glenn Baird is hoping the boys can find a few more wins to end his career on the highest possible note.
The towering 199cm forward has been an admired contributor to the South Eastern Australian Basketball League side since his first game for the Gunners in 2004. This year he will say goodbye to the game that has become such a significant part of his life, to focus on career and family. His wife is due to give birth to a baby at the end of October.
Glenn is among only a handful of Gunners players past and present to score over 2000 points for the club. To make this milestone more memorable he scored his 2000th point while playing his 200th game for the Gunners.
While he is humble of his achievements, which include playing college basketball in the USA as well as playing for the Canberra Cannons and Gunners, Glenn said he has many fond memories of the game. ‘As a young fella I had aspirations to make the NBL, I saw my college basketball career as a stepping stone to get there because I definitely wasn’t the most talented junior back down in Melbourne where I grew up. It was going to take a lot of hard work and training and that’s what the States gave me,’ Glenn said.
Glenn says he is confident in the future of the Canberra Gunners, with Canberra juniors showing a lot of potential on court. “We’ve got some really good talent coming through and I do a bit of coaching with the ACT juniors, there is a lot of talent in the U18/20s program - the Gunners have a bright future” Glenn said.
Glenn’s final home game of his career will be against Nunawading on Saturday 31 July at 7:30pm at the Belconnen Basketball Stadium.
