Nick Name: Dogga, Browndog, Sharky, Chance, Browny
Date of Birth: 24/05/1981
Height: 176cm
Position: Guard
Hometown: Canberra
Started playing basketball at the age of: 8
First Gunners Season: 2005

Interesting Facts

  • His passion outside of basketball is....travel
  • If he could live anywhere I would choose and why....Cape Town-most beautiful city in the world
  • His father always told him....that I would end up in the big house (jail)
  • He is very bad at....behaving
  • His favourite meal is.....Surf and Turf

Basketball History

Shane played 1-2 seasons with the Wests bball club at age 8 under the wonderful coaching of Moofi Brown. Many complaints were made because I would never be taken off the court. Shane then moved to Norths and played his whole junior career with the club. Was fortunate enough to be coached by Neil Richardson, Les Hurst and Ian Ellis, although I have branched away a little from what Les taught me because I tend to shoot a lot of 3's these days.

Shane played u14 and 16 nationals for ACT traveling to Tasmania and Victoria respectively. Represented the ACT School boys in 1998-1999 where he was selected in the Australian team.

From school Shane made the natural progression into the ACTAS program where he played many years (4 or 5) in the Waratah league. Shane was then selected in the Gunners program in 2005.

Memories from Gunners seasons that stick out include:

  • 2 GF defeats to Geelong and the big semi-final wins to get there;
  • Tearing his ACL-thanks Zlat and trying to chase Patty Mills around with 1 leg;
  • Frank Arsego's face after his first Gunners road trip;
  • Tassie adventures;
  • Point guard union;
  • Grant Keys managing to put up ridiculous numbers while only driving to his right hand side;
  • The big three, Pauly D, Keys and Petrie dominating all the guards shots;
  • Good times with good blokes
Joel Richardson

6. Joel Richardson

Nick Name: Richo, Jrich
Date of Birth: 07/01/1985
Height: 190cm
Position: Forward/Guard
Hometown: Canberra
Started playing basketball at the age of: 6
First Gunners Season: 2005

Interesting Facts

  • His passion outside of basketball is.... Travel and hanging with the boys. I better add spending quality time with the girlfriend as well!
  • If he could live anywhere, he would choose... and why.... Browny keeps telling me about the Sea of tranquillity so maybe the moon. Or anywhere the Australian accent allows you to do what you want, when you want, how you want and to whom you want.
  • His father always told him... to go play on the highway
  • He is (still) very bad at.... staying in Australia and playing defence without fouling
  • His last meal would be..... It would involve a Ballarat road trip to the pub on the corner. They serve up a lamb shank pie that is unbelievable.
  • He started playing basketball at the young age of around 6. It was the time when The Canberra Gunners were the hottest ticket in town and wearing your shorts around your ankles was seen as not only cool but a must.

Basketball History
Joel remembers small portions of his first season with the mighty U10’s Wests. He remembers getting up early and putting his first pair of basketball shorts on. He says he wasn’t the cool and fashion conscious kid he is today which resulted in his first pair of shorts being see through. Trust me he says – it wasn’t a good look wearing purple poker dot undies in your first game. 19 years on not much has changed in Canberra’s basketball community. Wests as a club is still a powerhouse, Bob Rosewarne is still representing the black and white stripes and I am still a little out of control on the court albeit with better dress sense.

Joel started taking basketball seriously when he made his first ACT rep side in U12’s as 10 year old. From there things just kept getting better and he just kept getting more and more passionate about basketball. He remembers Big Marty taking him to all the Cannons games back in the day. Watching those guys really inspired Joel and made him want to play at a level. Joel says, he remembers thinking to myself – “if Glenn Baird can play point guard for the cannons surely I can too”.

Joel was lucky enough to play ACT from the age of 10 every year up until his final U18’s program. Adding to that he was fortunate enough to captain his year group in all ages from U14’s, U16’s and U18’s. From all Joel’s junior representative teams to his 3 years of ITCP scholarship he finally made the ACTAS squad at the end of 2002. His first Waratah Season was in 2003 where he was mentored by a person he had always admired….maybe not for the way he played on the court but probably for his off court antics more. Shane Brown taught Joel how to be a point guard in a true professional league. With Shane’s promotion to Gunners the following year Joel then decided it was his turn to show people what he could do. He average 23 points and 8 rebounds a game in the 2004 season leading a very young team to a middle of the ladder finish.Joel moved into the Gunners program in 2005 with no expectations and playing behind some of the greatest Gunners to put on a jersey. The likes of Keyzy, Pauly D, Trigger, Calli and who can forget about Peach!!! Joel ended up the starting PG of the 2005 gunners and then being lucky enough to move to Canada to take up a spot on the Guelph Gryphons Basketball squad. Joel’s experience in Canada was something he could never have imagined. Playing basketball overseas was one of his childhood dreams. To say it was an easy transition would be lying. Joel moved in and out of the starting line up, playing in negative 46 degrees and playing under one of the craziest coaches Joel says he has ever met. That year in Canada made made Joel realise how hard you need to work every single minute you’re on the court.2007 was a tough year for Joel basketball wise. He had surgery to reconstruct his left ankle and really was a wasted year for him as a Gunner. Looking back it was a year of many downs but made him extremely hungry as a player. Since 2008 Joel’s game has changed from a flashy scorer who couldn’t care less about defense to a zealous athletic defender who takes great pride in stopping his man. Joel says his game has developed but the one thing that has stayed constant is his intense white line fever. Joel says “Many people may look at me on the court and say I have “issues”, I think Browny calls them my ADD moments on the court. I think my intense nature is sometimes looked down upon. I would like to think people see me as a very passionate gunner who will do anything on the court to win!!! Yes that might mean stealing a rebound, holding a jersey or in rare cases a polite chat to the black and whites!!!”

Joel says “Being a Gunner is everything to me!!! The boys, the game, the league, the parties, the road trips and of course the wins, is what makes being a Gunner so special!!!! Looking back I have been very lucky with basketball and hopefully the 2010 Gunners can be another one of those special things in my basketball career”.

7. Andrew Murphy

Nick Name: Murphy
Date of Birth: 05/03/82
Height: 184cm
Position: Point Guard
Hometown: Canberra
Started playing basketball at the age of: 12
First Gunners Season: 2008

Interesting Facts

  • His passion outside of basketball is....Music
  • If he could live anywhere, he would choose... and why....Vancouver – great scenery, great people and plenty of concerts.
  • His father always told him...Enjoy your life, look after your friends and family.
  • He is very bad at...golf
  • His last meal would be.....Mexican

Basketball History
When basketball was booming in the 1990’s, Andrew jumped on the bandwagon and started playing for Marist College Canberra. He played all throughout high school, and was part of the school’s Senior Team in 1998 and 1999. The team was always competitive, and placed in the top four at the National Schools Championships in these years.

After finishing Year 12, Andrew joined the Tuggeranong Southern Cross Basketball Club, following a tradition set by most Old Boys from Marist.

During this time Andrew moved to Canada and played in a lunchtime competition at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver. Andrew says, although it was not the highest quality tournament he has played in, it was an enjoyable competition and one he will look back on with fond memories.

When he returned to Australia he was asked to play for the new Tuggeranong Vikings team, coached by Brian Demmery. Andrew has played for the Vikings ever since, and although the coach and players may have changed, the team remains a three point shooting team, which he is more than happy with. No need for a shot clock when you play Vikings.

In 2008 Andrew was invited by Frank Arsego to try out for the Canberra Gunners. He found the level of play at trainings much higher than anything he had previously experienced, which helped him to improve his game significantly. To his surprise, Andrew was selected for the Gunners that season, despite having never played a game for the Canberra Nationals in the Waratah Australian Basketball League. And even though he spent the majority of the 2008 season filling up drink bottles and collecting splinters from the bench, he enjoyed his time on the team, and has always been grateful towards Frank for providing him the opportunity to play at this level.

After spending the following Gunners pre-season in New Zealand, I was not selected in the 2009 Gunners squad. I was disappointed on missing out on the team, and not having my own rookies to boss around, so for the 2010 pre-season I made sure I was in Australia and attended all training sessions. This commitment paid off, and I was again selected to be part of the Gunners program.

Now that I am a Gunner again, I am looking forward to the new season. I hope to represent the city and the team proudly, contribute to the team and continue enjoying my basketball.

Interesting Facts

  • His passion outside of basketball is....Music and movies
  • If he could live anywhere, he would choose... and why....my new house because it’s mine
  • His father always told him...GO HARD OR GO HOME.
  • He is very bad at...pitch and putt
  • His last meal would be.....macaroni and cheese and steak

Basketball History
Jamie started playing basketball for Melba High in year 8. He only started playing because all his friends were playing and never took it seriously due to a love of playing rugby league and union.

As Jamie kept improving his basketball skills over the years, he began getting more and more enjoyment out of it. So when he started Year 11 at Lake Ginninderra college he decided to give up football and concentrate on basketball.

He started playing for Belconnen Ramblers U18 div 2 team and by then he was playing basketball just about 24 hours a day 7 days a week on my drive way.

When Jamie finished college, so did his junior basketball. He then played for a year with my friends in the mens competition also playing for Ramblers.
In 2001, Jamie had some friends playing for Ginninderra Rats and they invited him to come along to the tryouts, so he went along for a bit of fun and surprisingly made the Div 2 team!

Luckily in 2003 a few of the older players in the Div 1 team had either retired or moved away and Jamie got a chance to play in the Div 1 team with ex Gunners Heath Marshall, Grant Yates and Hamish Hudson , which Jamie thought that was the greatest thing in the world!The following year Jamie tried out for the Canberra Nationals team with head coach Jerry Lee. Not thinking he would make the team, I just saw it as an opportunity to play more basketball. After a few weeks of tryouts he was informed that Ihad made the team. He continued to play with the team for 5 seasons with coach's Bruce Minards 2005-2007 and Brian Demmery.Over the 5 seasons of playing with Nationals team Jamie was able to improve his skills and learn a lot about the game and make some great friendships that he says he will have for the rest of his life!In 2008 Jamie tried out for the upcoming 2009 Gunners squad and had a great time training against the Gunners team for 4 months but unfortunately did not make the final team. 2009 saw Jamie spend a year working on his game so he could improve enough to hopefully make the 2010 Gunners squad and after another 4 months of hard working pre-season over the summer he was fortunate enough to be selected in the team in 2010!

Jamie says “The Gunners are a great bunch of guys and I am enjoying every minute of training and playing with the Gunners boys and am very proud every time I put on the singlet!”

Position: Guard

Interesting Facts

  • His passion(s) outside of basketball is/are.... experiencing different cultures around the world, quality couch time, fantasy basketball, listening to good music (80’s and hip hop), food and spending time with my girlfriend.
  • If he could live anywhere, he would choose... and why.... I would not trade any place for Australia but if I had to it would probably be somewhere in Europe, maybe Italy. Great food, good scenery and good lifestyle… can’t go wrong.
  • His father always told him... persistence always pays off - he uses his courting of my mum as an example.
  • He is (still) very bad at.... remembering dates, fantasy basketball, saving money… the list is too long for this.
  • His last meal would be..... A thick porterhouse steak (medium rare) with some spuds and greens and I would wash that down with an ice cold Peroni.
  • Anything else you want to add. My postgame routine of putting my socks and shoes on before I put on my jeans is not weird… just different.

Basketball History
Zlatko started playing basketball at age 12 on the courts at Gilmore Primary School. A primary school friend put him on to the Eveready junior club and he have never looked back. Zlatko has played all of his club basketball for Eveready followed by Minstrels - now known as the Tugggeranong Southern Cross.During his school days he played for the Caroline Chisolm High School team in grades 7 to 9 and played for Marist College in Grade 10. He then made the move to Erindale College for years 11 and 12 and joined the school's Talented Sports Program. His team was pretty competitive with a finish of 3rd in the '98 National Schools Championship.Zlatko’s representative basketball started with the ACT Under 15's development team. His junior coach at the time, Brian Demmery, convinced him to try out for the U16's ACT team and after some solid trials he was told he did not make the team. The disappointment of not being selected made him train much harder on improving his game and he was determined to make the team the following year.Zlatko represented the ACT from Under 16's to Under 18's and an injury to one of the ACT Academy of Sports athletes led to my call up to the ACTAS program. He played 3 seasons with the ACTAS team which gave him an exposure to good quality basketball against different styles of teams and players on a weekly basis. Zlatko says, the ACTAS experience developed his game with coaches such as Les Hurst and Mike McHugh helping mould me into the player he is today.Fast forward to 2000, Zlatko was selected to play for the Canberra Gunners. His rookie season was much like any rookie season. He didn't get on the court much and he did a lot of the bag carrying and water bottle duties for the senior players. His first break with the team was an injury to Brendan Mann prior to a road trip. Zlatko remembers it pretty clearly as he got the call from former coach Brad Barnes on the Friday afternoon whilst in the middle of a uni group study session for a marketing paper. He told my study group that I had to go and would not be able to study with them over the weekend. Needless to say they were not impressed.

Zlatko have been representing the Gunners for the good part of 8 seasons now and he says it has been an absolute privilige. His 2003 championship and playing alongside Gunners legends such as Paul Denman and Grant Keys are definite highlights. Zlatko says, being selected to Captain the team in 2007 was an honour and is a responsibility I take on with pride to this day.

First Gunners Season: 2007

Interesting Facts

  • His passion outside of basketball is.... Golf, Taylor Swift
  • If he could live anywhere, he would choose... and why.... Paradise Island, Bahamas. It’s in the name.
  • His father always told him... “go left”. He taught me to shoot, pass and hustle, what I needed was a left hand. When your opponent discovers you can't go left, you might as well hang it up.
  • He is very bad at... Travelling to Tasmania
  • His favourite meal is.....Pasta bake and Crème caramel.

Basketball History
Aaron didn’t start playing basketball until he was almost 16. Soccer and cricket dominated his youth, and are still great interests of his now. He started out playing for westies as a junior in the under 16 white division. For those who don’t recall, the divisions hierarchy went (in order of best to worst) state league 1, state league 2, blue, gold and then white. So it’s fair to say he started right at the bottom.

After one season at Wests Aaron moved to Radford where basketball became more important to him and he started taking it a lot more seriously. By the time Aaron was 17 he was representing ACT at southern junior league, and had moved up to junior state league for Radford. Under the guidance of ex Cannon player and Coach Ian Ellis at Radford, whom he credit most of my flawless ball handling and 3 point shooting ability, I was selected in the ACT u18 and u20 teams for the national championships.

Aaron then went back to Wests for senior basketball, and played two seasons with the Canberra Nationals in the ABL’s Waratah league before playing his first season with the Canberra Gunners in 2007. He has been travelling overseas for much of the last two years, Aaron says it’s good to be back in town and really working hard at season 2010 with the Gunners. The Gunners have a unique culture and rich history and one that Aaron is very proud to be a part of.

Nick Name: Jono, J Mill
Date of Birth: 17/6/85

Started playing basketball at the age of: 13
First Gunners Season: 2007

Interesting Facts

  • His passion outside of basketball is....Going out with the boys and spending time with my girlfriend.
  • If he could live anywhere I would choose and why....Queanbeyan - “City Living, Country Benefits”.
  • His father always told him....Make sure you never get caught doing something illegal and make sure you can out run the police.
  • He is very bad at....waking up early
  • His last meal would be.....Roast chicken sandwiches with lettuce, tomato and carrot with a little bit of mayo on wholemeal bread – nothing too gourmet!

Basketball History
Jono’s very first representative game was for the Queanbeyan Roadrunners div 2. At the age of 15 he was selected to play in the division 1 squad. Jono has played for the Queanbeyan Roadrunners my entire basketball career.

In 1999 Jono made the NSW Country State basketball team, the team was chosen from 40 players around the NSW. This was my first real elite competition he played in. Jono attended Erindale College through Year 11 & 12 and was apart of the Talented Sports Program. Jono says Erindale helped him greatly with more on court training and the excellent facilities. During December he played in the Division 1 National Schools Basketball Tournament in Ballarat. They took out the gold medal against Townsville High School. During 2004 Jono was in contact with an American High School Coach. He played at the school whilst on my tour in 2003. They wanted him to come over and play for them during their school year. Since High Schools do not give out scholarships Jono went over on a student exchange program. During his stay he was named in the Catawba Valley Classic All Tournament Team, which was quite an honour as only a select few are awarded this. He also received the MVP honours for the team. During his career in High School basketball Jono averaged 12.6 points, 8.5 Rebounds and 1.8 Steals per game. He was offered a scholarship to a div 2 school, Brevard College. But due to home sickness he came back to Australia to be with friends and family. Jono says his American trip was the turning point in his basketball career he knew now how hard he had to train to become an elite basketball player. He also had never played in such an environment the crowds were fanatic and mothers were vicious. It was an experience he says he will never take for granted.In 2005, Jono started to play for the Canberra Nationals in the ABA league. After a sombre first year and some coaching changes he picked up his scoring averages and also his game time. In 2007 Jono received a call from Nationals coach Bruce Minerds, he told Jono that he had been on the phone with Canberra Gunners Head Coach Frank Arsego and Frank wanted him to come and trial with the upcoming 2007 Gunners Squad. I remember going to my first training session and seeing the likes of Paul Denman, Anthony Petrie, Zlatko Todrovski and Nick Johnson. Jono’s next thought was this is going to be real tough and it was. It was the toughest basketball year he has ever had. He learnt a lot in his first year, with the experience of Denman, Petrie, Head Coach Arsego and all the other players giving him help and advice.

Jono’s third year with the Gunners he had a lot more experience under his belt and it showed, with his scoring averages increasing along with my minutes. He received two Game MVP Honours along with a SEABL runners up player of the week mention, with his game high 33 points. Jono says “the Canberra Gunners basketball programs has helped me become a better player with the consisted high level of players, competition within the group”.

Being a college basketball player and experiencing the college lifestyle in the United States is a memory he says he’ll never forget.

2010 is Mark’s first full season with the Gunners and he is excited to see how they perform against some great teams. Mark says “We have a lot of youth in this team and the next couple of years are going to be exciting times for the Gunners team and for the Gunners fans”.

Career Highlights/Memories:
Four years in America was a fantastic experience, I learnt so many things on and off the court about basketball and about myself. Graduated with a Degree in Psychology.

In 2002 I spent 6 months training with the Melbourne Tigers. Playing with Andrew Gaze was a childhood dream and definitely lived up to expectation. He is a great guy with a wealth of basketball knowledge, I learned from him every day.

In 2005, I thought it was best to have a break from basketball after 10 years straight. Playing AFL for that year was challenging but rewarding, it was key in bringing back my passion for basketball.

Since 2006 the time spent with the Canberra Gunners has been some of the best years of basketball for me. Even though there have been some big disappointments, i.e. losing Grand Finals back to back in 06-07, the culture of the team is the best I have ever experienced.
